The natural materials allow the construction of large and resistant buildings. Palm leaves have been used since ancient times because of their durability. The quality of this material is such that at present palm leaves continue to be used for the construction of roofs and roofs.
Benefits of palm leaf roofs
Although it may seem a weak and permeable construction, tropical countries, which suffer great storms, are the ones with the most palm roofs. At Verdeaurora Bio Farm we know firsthand the roofs built from palm leaves and the possibilities they offer.
In addition to preventing rainwater from leaking, palm roofs also favor perspiration. The palm leaves favor the refraction of the sun’s rays. This causes the radiation to bounce off the roof, keeping the room cool even in the hottest months.
This is one of the reasons why we opted for the construction of roofs of palm leaves in our facilities at the Verdeaurora Bio Farm.
How are palm roofs constructed?
There are different construction techniques with which great results are achieved. In addition, the maintenance of these ceilings is not much greater than the usual ones that are made with tiles.
The ceilings or roofs of palm resemble a fabric. The most used technique is to interlace the pinnae or leaflets until we get the structure we want. Pinnae or leaflets are the filaments or segments that make up the palm leaf.
The palm leaves are interlaced and stacked until a waterproof cover is obtained. This will resist rainwater and any atmospheric phenomenon that may damage the interior of the room.
Another technique used in the manufacture of palm roofs is the stacking of some sheets on top of others. The stems can be used to fortify the cover. They can also be used for the manufacture of gutters where rainwater will circulate.
These constructions do not require extra materials. The palm leaves, nails and hammer are enough to create one of these resistant covers.
